Office update: I currently offer both in-person and virtual appointments

Hello!

I’m Dr. Shira Benhorin (she/her), clinical psychologist, and my passion is working with preschoolers/children, adolescents, and families. If you have reached my website, you are likely a parent or caregiver who is searching for answers and support.  Being a parent is the most challenging and rewarding job. It is full of highs and lows, and brings about the most intense emotions such as love, pride and joy, but often also stress and worry. We all want our children to be happy, kind, and well adjusted.  When our child struggles in any area, it is very common for us to feel overwhelmed, worried, and isolated, especially when we feel like we have tried everything to address our concerns, but see minimal progress.

I welcome you to my office at the Child & Family Psychotherapy Clinic, where concerns about your child’s mental health, will be replaced with greater clarity and an action plan. We will do so by developing a trusted therapeutic relationship, setting concrete therapeutic goals, and developing a treatment plan in order to promote meaningful progress and change. As a team member, I consider the parents I work with, the experts—you know your child and family best. When I join your team, my goal is to work with your child and family. I will rely on your knowledge, observations, and feedback to help guide my assessment and treatment recommendations. How will I contribute to our team efforts? I will bring in all of the expertise, knowledge, and resources I have gained from over two decades of therapeutic work with children, adolescents, and families.  Therapy will consist of an initial intake evaluation, followed by a combination of individual therapy sessions with your child, parent sessions, and family therapy sessions, as needed. Regardless of the type of session, I will always touch base with you to ensure you understand where things stand and what the plan is moving forward.

As a clinical and community psychologist, I strongly believe that in order to obtain meaningful change, it is essential to not only work closely with the child and parents but, when needed, also work collaboratively with other professionals to ensure that we are all “on the same page.” That includes teachers/school personnel, psychiatrists, pediatricians/physicians, speech, and occupational therapists.  As such, my intervention may include connecting with other providers who work with the child, conducting classroom observations, and attending meetings (e.g., 504 plan, IEP).

Your child may be struggling in one or more areas, but there is no doubt they also posses many strengths. I strive to identify those strengths and build upon them.  Together, we can make a difference and help your child and family get the answers you are looking for, and move in the right direction. The direction you want to see your child and family move toward. I will be honored to join your family on this journey!
